New Wishes

Please post your ideas for wishes here as comments on "New Wishes." I will do my best to place these new wishes onto a separate post so that others can respond with comments. Thanks!

  1. (a) I would not have a good excuse to avoid yard work on hot muggy days.
    (b) The makers of calamine lotion would go out of business.

  2. (1) Would frogs and bats starve to death?
    (2) Do mosquitoes carry any diseases that affect humans or animals? I will look this up and try to post something about mosquitoes.

  3. According to the NY Times, there are 10 types of encephalitis that are vectored by mosquitos.

  4. I don't know about bats and frogs, but wishing mosquitoes out of existence would theoretically increase life expectancy in third world countries, decrease mortality, and result in an increase in population which would stress the food supply, leading to problems with starvation and death.

  5. For the next wish, what would you wish for if you had a wish to make with the good of humanity (or just the good for you) in mind? And those who read that wish, what unfortunate, unexpected consequences could you invent theoretically? Experts and instructors are welcome to reply.

  6. To keep things going...

...for some background about the Monkey's Paw (which I think I have right; if I'm wrong please correct me), a guy goes into a shop and buys a monkey's paw. He gets three wishes as a result of buying this paw. However, every time he uses a wish, something terrible and unforeseen happens as a consequence. Hence my name as moderator, "Unintended Consequences." What would be your Monkey's Paw wishes?

I suppose if I had a wish, it would be for me to get a job (I'm out of work; hence this blog is time well spent). I can already think of some pretty sad, pretty screwed up unintended consequences to this wish, but I will wait a while to say what they are.
